There are also other very interesting pathologies that induce sleepiness, one of which is known as narcolepsy. This is a complex neurohormonal manifestation that is triggered in the brain to induce acute hypersomnolent states. Other sleep related disorders that can induce poor sleep patterns and excessive sleepiness also include something called periodic limb movement disorder and sleep disorder breathing. There are medical conditions that worsen the true "efficiency" of sleep.

All of this that I have mentioned to you is more of a lesson in the complexities of sleep. What I want as the take home message is to understand the importance of a good night sleep and not to rationalize it to "lifestyle", "work schedules" or otherwise, because the consequences of excessive sleepiness are paramount.

Excessive sleepiness is associated with significant morbidity. In fact, not only effects a person's individual safety and productivity, but it also has an impact on his family, his fellow employees, his employers and society as a whole. This is most clearly seen in the increased frequency of automobile accidents in several populations such as those with sleep apnea, narcolepsy, rotating and night shift workers as well as those of use in the illustrious field in medicine. I can remember 100 hour work weeks as a medical resident for example. Excessive sleepiness can also be associated with a variety of environmental disasters as those of you might remember Three Mile Island and Chernobyl.
